Greetings and Hello, I've been trying to identify the date of an early PRS CE 24 model serial number 173172. I've done my research and have come up with the fact that it is either a 1991 or 1992.
I've used the PRS site and another, and have found conflicting data. If anyone knows the PRS dating system very well I could really use a hand finding out exactly when this guitar was built. The original owner agrees as well that we are in the right ball park (91 or 92).
Another question I'd like to to know about early PRS guitars is, does anyone know when they switched over from Brazilian Rosewood to Indian Rosewood fretboards? I'm not totally sure when but I read it was somewhere in 1991. If anyone could help out on either of these questions that would be a great help. Thank you so much. John C I think you're right. That leads us to the year 1991 according to the 'Serial Number Year-Code Prefix' via PRSguitars.com. The next numeral in the SN, 7, then indicates CE - we're right on there. Then we are left with '3172.' When you match up the 3172 to the CE Models Approximate Serial Numbers list on PRSguitars.com, it has the guitar listed as being built in 1990 - this to me is where they threw us the curveball. In 1990 the Serial numbers for CE Models were 1831-3200. I think it's safe to say that this guitar was the 3,172 CE built in 1990.

The only slightly confusing thing is 1985 guitars start with the same number as a 1995 guitar. 1986 guitars start with the same number as a 1996 guitar 1987 guitars start with the same number as a 1997 guitar etc. All you have to remember is, guitars built in 1985 would have a very low number, while guitars built in 1995 would have really high numbers. 5 = 1985 1 = 1991 6 = 1986 2 = 1992 7 = 1987 3 = 1993 8 = 1988 4 = 1994 9 = 1989 5 = 1995 numbers will be over 20,000 after this year 0 = 1990 6 = 1996 7 = 1997 Presumably 1999 will be the same formula; I don't know what they'll do in the year 2000. Possible exceptions Because the bolt on guitars have numbers stamped on them conceivably they could be using 1994 plates up until at least February of 1995. I don't think they throw the preprinted plates away just because the year changes. I am not sure of this but I do remember getting 1992 guitars delivered in 1993 etc. Other ways to tell Important changeover years 1991 -- PRS stopped offering Brazilian rosewood fingerboards.
