Tokai Jazz Sound Bass Serial Numbers
The 'Traditional Series' Tokai models are now made in China, not Korea. How to tell the difference.
Square one of the classic P bass sound is the sound of James Jamerson. The bass body and install a Jazz bass type single coil pickup by the bridge. If you can find one with a 'JV' serioal number it is most likely from 1981 to 1983. I guess the one that is most known and sought-after today is the Tokai Hard Puncher.
Korea/Chinese models have 3 screws on the trussrod cover, Japanese Tokais have 2. Japanese Tokais have the Made in Japan under the clearcoat on the back of the headstock. Yes, the Canadian distributor illegally went ahead and had guitars made in China, there are still a few of them floating around Canada.we call them 'Fakais', and I call him a disgusting thief.
