I got Battleground WW2 a few years ago after painting some Easy 8 figures for a friend. I found the rules to be easy to read, but with a few points that need some clarification. I started just as the company was cutting back on their website and contact, and I initially contacted them about replacement parts for some missing hand/weapon parts in a few of the packages of troops I had to work on, so it was a bit of a worry getting in to the new game system. With that in mind, I quit trying to get their figures as there are so many great WW2 miniatures in many scales available on the market. The rules were good enough to me that I was willing to take the loss of support from the company and accept the advice of other players, while looking elsewhere for figures. I like the randomness of the card-based phases, and the 'actions' give you a clear idea of who is doing what when. While some who play WW2 skirmish gaming seek to field full companies with lots of armor and dont like the level of detail that Battleground WW2 brings, I was looking for something that had the feel of the old Combat TV series.
It is very possible to play out the old TV episodes, as well as movies such as The Big Red One, Kelly's Heroes, and Saving Private Ryan. The level of play invites you to name each of the figures in your element.
Speical rules include Medics and heroes, which some players find to take too much time, but I find part of the interesting aspects of the game. At the time I bought the rules, they were also becomming hard to find on the market, so I got them on Ebay. Most of the rules modules I got for it were also gotten from Ebay. The rules are once again available through several hobby shops around the country, so if your local shop doesnt carry them, ask if they will order them from their distributor. I don't hear much about their figure line coming back, but that really isnt a big problem. If you are looking for a good set of WW2 rules for playing platoon size or smaller elements, give Battleground WW2 a try.

Check the associated Yahoo group (BGWW2) to get any questions answered. Watch for games being run at a game convention near you and sign up for one. If a detailed squad level game is what you are looking for, I dont think you will be disappointed. I had real mixed feelings about BGWWII. It was very chart-intensive, which isn't necessarily a good thing if many of the mechanics can be abstracted down to the same kinds of die rolls.
It was expensive, if you got all the supplements. (Even the PDF versions were pricey.) And, if you look at the list of other WWII skirmish rules, it wasn't clearly the best. Still, it had its charms. Crazybump crack download. It was fun to play, if a bit clunky at times.
I'd recommend that people shop around a bit, particularly since it may not be possible to find all the BGWWII rulebooks these days. (Their web site seems to be down, and I'm not sure how many stores still carry their stuff.) An older list of WWII skirmish rules is at the Miniatures Page. The game came with some carboard cutouts (really flimsy card though) so its possible to play it out of the box.
